Engagement Rings By The Numbers

XO Group Inc. released the results of its engagement and jewelry study, which surveyed more than 10,000 U.S. brides and 1,000 U.S. grooms either engaged or married in the past year.  What they find out might surprise you.

-Average engagement ring center stone size: 1-carat, with an average of 1.4 total carat weight of diamonds

-Average Price:  Engagement rings averaged at $5,200, which was lower than survey results from 2008.   12 percent of grooms spent more than $8,000 on the engagement ring as part of a group  defined as the “Luxury Ring Segment.”  The average price spent on a luxury engagement ring was  $13,500.  For wedding bands, the cost was $1,126 for the brides and $491 for the grooms.

-Most Popular Cut: 53 percent of grooms preferred the round cut, while 30 percent bought a princess cut. 

-Most Popular Metal: 73 favor white gold, 27 percent of grooms chose tungsten, and 16 percent chose titanium, up from 13 percent in 2008.

-Amount Of Time Planning Purchase: The survey found  on average, it took a groom three months to find an engagement ring and 41 percent of grooms chose to add personal elements to there engagement rings.
